5 Quick Tips on Replacing Your Humidifiers Filter

Humidifier-Filter-Replacement

This is a generic instruction on how to replace your humidifier filters. Keep in mind that some models will be designed different from others and the best instructions will be from your manufacturer. These steps do not apply to changing a furnace humidifier filter or other specialty appliances beyond the common table top units. Also, disassembling of your humidifier beyond what is required to change the filter might void you warranty so check the information that was included in the packaging before you begin.

  1. Remove the water tank. This is something that should be easy for most people to identify and perform since the water tank is needs to be regularly refilled during the course of using the humidifier. While we are here it is a good time to clean and disinfect the water tank to kill off any potential growth of bacteria. Partially fill the tank about half way and add about a cup of bleach. Allow the solution to sit for about 20 minutes.
  2. Remove the motor housing. This is the casing over much of the unit. After removing this piece the filter should be exposed and you are ready for the next step.
  3. Remove the filter. Simply pull up or out, depending on how your particular model was designed, to remove the filter. At this point some models offer reusable filters. It is best to simply replace it with a fresh, new filter to guarantee that it is clean.
  4. Clean the base. With the filter removed it is a good opportunity to do a little bit of cleaning. Wipe any reachable surface around the humidifier with a cloth and then use the water/bleach solution from the water tank to disinfect the base. This is the farthest you should go in terms of disassembling the unit.
  5. Install the new or clean filter. After the base has been cleaned off the new filter should fit snugly just like the old one did. Make sure it is a perfect fit so that nothing gets through without being filtered.

Putting the rest of the unit back together should not be hard. It is a matter of reversing what you did to take it apart and since most new models especially are conscious of being user friendly, they are designed to be taken apart and reassembled with ease. With a clean unit and fresh filter the humidifier is ready to be used or tucked away for storage until next season.
