Three Instances Where Epoxy Garage Floor Covering Should Not be Used

You are currently in the market for floor covering that you can use to improve the appearance of your garage. As I'm sure you've heard by now, there are several types of garage floor covering from which to choose. Epoxy garage floor covering is one of these types. While epoxy garage floor covering does provide some benefits to those who use it, there are some instances in which it should not be used. This article will explore three of these instances, in case any of them might apply to you.

For starters, epoxy garage floor covering requires extensive surface preparation before it can be installed, in order to insure adequate bonding between the epoxy and the underlying floor. That means that the floor must be completely free of dirt, grease, and other contaminants. Cracks and chips in the floor must be patched in order to provide a uniform surface. This can be extremely labor intensive. It should be mentioned that epoxy garage floor covering will not adhere to stained floors. If you have a severely stained garage floor, or a floor that is very dirty, with a lot of chips and cracks, then you should not try to install epoxy garage floor covering on the floor.

Due to the toxic fumes that are often given off by epoxies as they cure, you need to make sure that you are working in a well-ventilated area, and using protective clothing, like gloves, goggles, boots, and in some instances, a respirator. If your garage is not a well-ventilated area, or if you don't want to invest in any protective clothing, then you should not install epoxy garage floor covering.

A Concrete Epoxy Coating Means Less Maintenance

One area at home that is mostly disregarded in terms of maintenance is the outside surfaces that are walked or driven on. This is perhaps due to the assumptions that the majority of people have about concrete or asphalt. Since they are hard substances, it is assumed that they are permanent and cannot be destroyed, but that is false. Taking good care of your driveway or garage floor before hand will stop maintenance problems and prevent stress later on. The best way to protect these surfaces is to use an epoxy garage floor coating to give these areas the care they deserve.

Different kinds of concrete epoxy coatings are available. As concrete becomes old it requires an increased level of maintenance, therefore the application or installation of a coating would reduce these problems related to the aging of concrete. In case you own a concrete porch, sidewalk, garage floor, or driveway, the following are some advantages to think about when contemplating buying and installing this coating material;

Reduce Damage Caused By Freezing

Concrete will incur very tiny cracks as it ages. These cracks fill up with water when it rains or when you rinse off the surface. They then become larger every time the temperature goes down below zero degrees and the water turns to ice. If no action is taken, the frozen water will begin weathering the concrete and the cycle will only worsen. The application of an epoxy sealing coat will plug the small cracks and thus discontinue the deterioration.
