A Quick Guide To Kitchen Lighting Design

Want to remodel your kitchen, or simply update the lighting, but don't know the first thing about kitchen lighting design? Well listen up, because the basics are pretty straightforward.

The first thing to get right out of your head is any notion of using a central light source as the main means of illumination. This is Big Mistake Number One in the roll call of bad lighting ideas. So what should you do instead? The answer is "layers", which is using several different types of lighting, with each adding a new layer to the preceding one.

First up is the ambient lighting layer. This is not in fact a million miles from central lighting, but the point is that it is used only to provide a background level of light, not to attempt to illuminate the whole kitchen. It should be fairly soft and diffuse, so controlling it with a dimmer switch helps immensely. This provides the base layer so to speak and if it isn't present then the other forms of lighting will be in effect laid on darkness and thus overly contrasting.

LED Home Lighting – Leading the Way to a Brighter Future

LED lights are those dinky little colored lamps in Christmas tree lights and kids' toys, right? Well, yes they are but these days they are also so much more; in fact, LED lighting is poised to soon become the predominant form of domestic and commercial lighting in the world. How so?

Over the past several years, the technology behind viable domestic LED light bulbs was already advancing at a rapid rate, but take up by consumers was hampered by the usual Catch-22 when trying to establish any new product. Until consumers start buying a product in large enough numbers, there isn't an incentive for manufacturer's to invest further n the technology, and through mass production force the price down. But because the products price is high, people won't buy the product in large enough numbers to warrant further investment. Thus the Catch-22 situation.

Quite recently though, the technology was given a lucky break came when it was internationally agreed that continuing to use one hundred year old incandescent light bulb technology had to come to an end, and fast.
