How to Pick a Great Heat Pump For Your Home

Every homeowner should know how to pick a great heat pump. There are many variables to consider and this guide will help you sort them out. Follow these tips and you’ll end up with a great heat pump – the one that is right for your home and needs.

1. Choose a heat pump in light of your housing plans. Do you plan to live in your home for the next 20 years? If so, buying the most efficient heat pump, and the one that does best in heat pump reviews, makes sense. It will cost more than a budget model, but reduced energy bills and fewer repair bills will make it a more cost-effective choice through the years.

If you plan to move in less than 5 years, you won’t get your money’s worth from a high-end heat pump. In that case, an inexpensive heat pump will be a better choice financially. If you plan to live where you are for the foreseeable future, but perhaps not forever, choose a quality heat pump that is right for your climate and budget.

2. Consider your Climate. In very warm climates you’ll want a heat pump with a high SEER rating. Choose one that is the 17+ SEER range. Currently, heat pumps are available with up to 24 SEER. In moderate climates without extreme temperatures, a less efficient heat pump will suffice. Look for one with a SEER rating of 14-17 and an HSPF rating of 8.0 to 9.0. By the way, the SEER rating, or Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating, measures cooling efficiency. The HSPF rating, or Heat Seasonal Performance Factor, measures heating efficiency.

Mom’s Straightforward Advice on Cleaning a Home

Here are some tips from my Mom on making your house cleaning efforts more practical, efficient, and manageable. There's some true gems in here - don't knock Mom's advice until you try it!

Knock out one room at a time. Cleaning an entire house is pretty intimidating but the key to any task is to break it up into smaller tasks. When approaching a monstrous cleaning project, break it down and knock it out one room at a time. This also makes it easier to delegate cleaning to others - like kids, who should be responsible for cleaning their own rooms, and older kids, who should be able to handle a good bathroom cleaning.

Professional clean your carpets once every 1-2 years. Renting out a carpet cleaner (or paying someone to do it for you) isn't exactly cheap but man oh man - what a difference it makes! For families with kids or dogs (or kids and dogs!) cleaning the carpets is mandatory! With children and animals, I'd suggest going for it at least once a year, possibly twice. Those households with only adults can get away with doing it about every 2 years.

Dry Clean Only: Dealing With This Pesky Clothes Tag

If I had found a blouse or dress I loved I would walk away from it in a heartbeat if I flipped over the tag only to read those dreaded 3 words:

"Dry Clean Only."

As much as I love hauling clothes to a dry cleaner and having to spend my lunch break picking them up the next day, I just don't have time to deal with this requirement.

Or do I?

The truth is many garments that are labelled with Dry Clean Only can be cleaned with other methods. Yes it is a little risky but I'd rather learn how to clean my own clothes at home then deal with having another weekly errand just to wear a blouse.

Tips for Cleaning Dry Clean Only Garments

If you're going to wash items yourself that "should" be taken to a dry cleaner, here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • use cold water
  • use a mild detergent over a strong detergent
  • set your washer to delicate
  • place the item inside a garment protection bag

You might also try hand washing the item. This method is much more gentle on the fabrics that being tossed around in a washer for 60 minutes surrounded with 20 pounds of wet clothing. Again you should use a mild detergent.

A lot of people simply get to a point where they can’t substitute sofas, beds, televisions and furniture to make their situation work. Contemplating the length of the lot you will need to build the home of your dreams is another crucial area hat requires some professional advice. Are you considering a nice pond or if you live in the Nanaimo area you probably already have a natural scene of trees and lush green land is part of your panorama. Quality home builders and designers will always suggest floor to ceiling windows facing a spectacular scene like this.

Architekton – the Master Builder

When building your dream home having a true Master Builder oversee the job is obviously your highest priority. For those building in beautiful British Columbia Canada there are a handful of Vancouver Island Custom Home Builders who could fill the role.

The title, Architect is derived for the Greek, 'Architekton' which means Master Builder. The ancient master builder of Greece was trained in every aspect of the design and construction of a building. Their responsibility went well beyond architectural design. The master builder of Greece was the over seer of the entire construction project, from concept to design and right through all phases of construction. This is what defines a Master Builder.

In ancient times the Architektron worked directly with the home owner. There was no General Contractor between. So, there was no risk of misinterpretation of the original architectural design. Today there are few modern day master builders. The high standards and responsibilities of the masterbuilder are quite unique and require extreme passion and dedication. The true master builder can't separate design from the construction as he see's the two as blended parts of the whole. It's this driving passion that leads the master builder to strive for excellence in all of his projects. It's a mistake to think that a modern day architect can assume the role of master builder.

Readily Available Refrigerator Replacement Parts – Which Brands?

Looking for replacement parts for a refrigerator can be frustrating and inconvenient. Most replacement parts for refrigerators can take days or weeks to be replaced which can render the unit unusable for a long time. This is because a lot of refrigerator brands do not have available refrigerator parts in the market and if ever they do, these are mostly offered in a few stores only, so the customers have a hard time finding them.

This can become a very serious problem especially when you need immediate repairs to your refrigerator. Sometimes, certain refrigerator parts are already phased out, so having your refrigerator repaired would be out of the question. Instead, you would have to buy a new one.

There are only several brands of refrigerators that offer ready and available stock of replacement parts. However, these parts are made and produced specifically for their units so they aren't compatible with other brands. GE refrigerator parts for example, would only work for GE brands of refrigerators and not for any other brand or label.

Be Water Wise at Home

With the effects of global warming already arguably beginning, many parts of the world have been in drought for at least some part of the past decade, and many of those now have permanent water conservation measures in place.

Potable water is expected to become increasingly scarce in coming years, particularly in already dry areas, including much of the United States. So now is the time to begin adaption techniques. These may well include installing rainwater and grey water systems, but they can also include simply learning to use less water. The following tips are a good place to start.

In the Bathroom

  • Use a shower timer to help you take shorter showers. This is one of the easiest ways to save significant amounts of water.
  • Install a water saver shower head.
  • Turn off the water while you wash your hair.
  • Use a bucket to collect the run off while you wait for the hot water to flow through, then use the water for cleaning or for watering the garden, or even for flushing the toilet.
  • Brush your teeth with the tap off.
  • Turn off the tap while you shave - run some hot water into the sink and rinse your razor in that.
  • Give both pets and kids very shallow baths.

Different Plumbing Needs in Every Home

Plumbing is an essential although complex aspect of any home maintenance or house renovation project. When it comes to plumbing in Sacramento there are a number of qualified plumbers that can advise you on how to get the best results from the plumbed aspects of your project.

In most Sacramento homes, plumbing is integral to almost every room in the house. Central heating systems mean that pipes will have to be laid everywhere in order to feed the water to the radiators. Central heating works by using gas or electricity to heat water in the pipes and radiators around the home. This changes the ambient temperature in the premises.

Often radiators leak and you will need to call a plumber that is a heating specialist to look at it. Sometimes the radiators might get air trapped in them but it is easy enough to bleed them yourself if you know what you are doing. If you are not sure, call a plumber.

Water systems in the kitchen consist of the sink and faucets. You may also want to have a waste disposal unit fitted.

Mini Refrigerator for Your Room

Sharing an apartment with a friend has its advantages and disadvantages. I am not complaining mind you, I like my flat mate and we have known each other since high school and we get along pretty well. It's just that I am a bit of a private and picky person.

There are some things that I am willing to share and some that I do not want to share at all. The advantages of having a flat mate is that I have someone to share the expenses of the apartment like the lease of the apartment, the electric bill, water bill and the cable bill. I can also share some of the things I have like books, magazines, and some food for meals. But when it comes to chocolates, pies, tarts and some chips and dips, I usually keep it to myself. I will share if I feel like sharing them with others.

That is the disadvantage of having some else sharing your apartment. My friend often times just gets or uses or eats what she thinks is for sharing and that really irritates me. So, complaining to my mother about it, she told me to get a fridge of my own and put it in my room.
